Lake Michigan Residence

Residential

Construction Type: New Construction

Location: Whitehall

Size: 3,000 Square Feet

The owners of this new residence were primarily concerned with integrating architecture with site.  They wanted the house married to the sand dunes, with existing trees left as close as possible to the exterior walls, so that the house looked like it had always been there.  They also thought that with sufficient height they might be able to see Lake Michigan to the west, and Duck Lake to the east. The kitchen was seen as the heart of the house, and thus placed accordingly as a center cylinder.  We considered many different layouts for this special site but ended up with two rectangles which are joined by a center hinge.  The kitchen is circular in plan, symbolically and functionally becoming the center pin which engages the two adjacent rectangles.
