This new pre-school space for Headstart children was literally carved from the basement of a 1910 stone church. As the church floor above sloped downwards towards the pulpit, the ceiling heights within the space were too low to be used for much beyond storage. Our design solution to gain adequate ceiling height was to carve out the basement floor while embracing and highlighting the sloping, fan-shaped ceiling beams which supported the floor above. The end result does not feel like a basement at all, and has created a bright, open, & exciting learning environment for the children.
